According to the BMW Group’s official Weibo account on December 14, 2023, BMW Group’s vehicles equipped with L3-level autonomous driving functions officially obtained a high-speed highway autonomous driving test license in Shanghai.
In the future, BMW will carry out L3 high-speed autonomous driving road tests in designated areas under the supervision and guidance of the Shanghai Municipal Government. BMW Group's L3 autonomous driving has become a product that complies with the United Nations UN ECE R157 ALKS regulations and has received approval for high-speed road testing in China. In the future, BMW will launch products equipped with the L3 autonomous driving function at an appropriate time under the premise of complying with Chinese laws and regulations, in order to meet Chinese consumers' demand for advanced intelligent driving.
For a long time, the BMW China R&D team has actively localized the development of L3 autonomous driving. In accordance with regulatory requirements, it has been fully prepared for the future adaptation and application of L3 autonomous driving functions in China to meet China's complex traffic conditions and Chinese customers. The new BMW 5 Series Long Wheelbase Edition, which will soon be launched in China, is technically equipped with the ability to expand to L3 autonomous driving.
Earlier, the BMW Group passed the stringent technical regulation approval of the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) and has been certified and approved for the L3 autonomous driving function. BMW models equipped with this feature are due to be delivered to customers in Germany in the spring of 2024. Up to now, the German Federal Motor Transport Authority has only approved the L3 autonomous driving function for very few automakers, and the BMW Group's technical approval is a strong indication that BMW has become one of the advanced automobile manufacturers to realize high-level autonomous driving.
